PROMISE PROJECT REPORT

We now have 2002 promises, only 99 997 998 to go!

This month, we collected promises at a couple of local events. On June 27 we set up at the 2nd Clareview Village Block Party, and on June 30 we set up at the Callingwood Farmers’ Market.

At the Clareview Village Block Party, among others we collected a promise from Edmonton City Councillor, Aaron Paquette. He was the second politician this month to promise. Earlier we collected a promise from the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, Randy Boissonnault.

There are a number of places around the world where Esperanto is visible to locals and visitors, but there are not many such places in the Canadian Prairies. One exception is the Ateliero Verda Art Gallery and Studio in Drumheller. Owned by Quebec born artist and Esperanto speaker, Jacqueline Sveda. Travellers may notice the big sign above the storefront written in Esperanto “Galerio kaj Studio” (Gallery and Studio). On a smaller sign above the door is “Informa Giĉeto pri la Lingvo Esperanto” (Information Counter for the Language Esperanto). On a day off from the Promise Project, David and his wife visited Drumheller and took these pictures.

EDMONTON EVENTS

For several years now, a small group that speak, or are interested in learning Esperanto have been meeting in Edmonton most Tuesday evenings. Anyone interested in learning and/or practicing Esperanto is welcome to attend. Most Tuesdays we meet at 10865 96 St. (Note: Because of the Restaurant event, we will not meet at 96 St. on June 18!) Call David at 780-904-0363 for more information.

Friends of Esperanto International Restaurant Event

On July 16, Friends of Esperanto will be visiting Turquaz Alaturka Restaurant at 14016 127 St. to enjoy Turkish cuisine and meet others who like the idea of Esperanto. We plan to start at 7:00 pm. The restaurant would like to know how many to expect, so if you are interested in coming, please register for the event on our registration page ea-mondo.org/register. (click here for map)

WORLD EVENTS

The following information about upcoming Esperanto events was taken from eventaservo.org.

In July there are 140 Esperanto events scheduled in 26 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Britain, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Ukraine, and the United States. Twelve countries are hosting a total of 29 multi-day events.

This month’s main event, also the biggest Esperanto event of the year, the World Esperanto Congress in Finland from July 20 – July 27. One of the 854 people from 57 countries who have registered for the Congress is Edmonton Esperanto speaker, David Yaki. David will be attending the Congress, interviewing participants, and making a presentation about the Promise Project. He hopes to find Esperanto activists in other parts of the world who will join in the effort to collect promises and help us reach our goal of collecting 100 000 000 promises within 5 years.

Start learning Esperanto now and you can be completely fluent for next year’s World Congress in Montreal Canada.
